Navarathri 1



During Navaratri, some devotees worship Durga Devi for the first three days, next three days Lakshmi is worshiped and the last three days, Saraswathi Devi is worshiped. Tenth day is Vijaya dashami which is also called Vidyaarambham. But some other devotees worship Navadurgas or nine Durgas and each day, one particular aspect of Devi is worshiped.
First let us explore the meaning of "Durga" and then worship one aspect of Durga Devi each night. Devi Bhagavatham gives several meanings and some of them are : Durga is
1.  one who helps us to overcome misery or suffering.
2.  One who destroys durgathi or bad fate.
3. One who is incomprehensible or one who can never be defeated.
4. One who protects us from all difficult situations.
Shailaputri or Daughter of Mountain
Himavan's daughter Parvathi Devi is the first among nine Durgas. She carries a trident in one hand and in the other hand, she has a lotus. Nandi is the vahana. Her head is adorned by a beautiful half moon. In the previous janma Parvathy was Sathi or Daakshaayani, daughter of Daksha.


A half-moon adores her head, she rides on the bull Nandi and has a spear in her hand.

In the previous birth, she was Sati, daughter of Daksha.

वन्दे वाञ्छितलाभाय चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखरां 
वृषारूढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीम् यशस्विनीम्        
 
Vande vaanchitalaabhaaya  Chandrardhakruthashekharaam
Vrusharoodhaam Shooladharaam Shailaputhree Yashsvineem.

Sree Durgaayai Nama:
First sloka from Sankaraachaarya's Devi sthotram
Na mantram no yantram thadapi cha na jane sthuthimaho,
Na chahwanam dhyanam thadapi cha na jane sthuthi kadha,
Na jane mudrasthe thadapi na jane vilapanam,
Param jane matha thwadanusaranam klesa haranam.

Neither I know mantra nor thanthra nor your praise,
Neither I know how to call you, nor meditate nor praise you,
Neither I know mudras nor how to cry to you,
But I know that by obeying you, I would get rid of all problems.

I always used to wonder why one of Bhagavan's name is  Vishama:  because the ordinary meaning I associated with that word was "a state of unhappiness or sorrow arising from some kind of difficulties". Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Bhaktha Prahlada's previous life

5/7/09 In Bhagavad Gita Bhagavan said:    "Antha kale cha smaran mukthva kalebaram ya: prayaathi sa madbhaavam yaathi naasthi athra samshaya:"   "One who thinks of me at the time of death will attain me. This is beyond doubt."   Also Bhagavan clarifies further by saying:  "What you are thinking at the time of your death shapes your next janma because you would have meditated or continuously thought about that for a long time in your life and because of that vaasana you would be able to think only of that."   In Bhagavatham Jadabharatha's story illustrates this point. Bharatha, son of Rishabha Deva  was a great devotee of Bhagavan. But he was deeply attached to a deer and ended up thinking of it at the time of death.
