14 Mnavantharaas

11/3/08

"Manvatharaani sath dharma" meaning  manvantharaas are for establishing righteousness.

What is manvanthara? Manvanthara can be considered as an era ruled by one Manu. Now let us look at the calculations reaching manvanthara starting from yugas:

Kritha yuga - 1,728,000 years
Thretha yuga- 1,296,000 years
Dwapara yuga- 864, 000 years
Kali yuga- 432,000 years

All four yugas together or Chathuryuga or Mahayuga- 4,320,000 years

71 chathuryugas or Mahayugas - one Manvanthara

14 Manvantharas - one Kalpa - one daytime of Brahma.

The purpose of Creation, is the elevation of all creatures through various stages, to the realization of  Pramaathma. This is done through 14 Manus who are the progenitors of mankind. So dharma is first manifested through Manus.

In Bhakthivedantha Swami's words: "Manu is the father of mankind, the progenitor, empowered to guide the human race towards self-realization. Manu provides revealed scriptures to mankind which regulate their activities in a manner that will be for their eternal welfare."

We are currently in the seventh manwanthara and our Manu is Vaivasvatha. We have passed 27 Mahayugas out of 71 and we are going through Kaliyuga of the 28th Chathuryuga of this 7th Manwanthara.

The Manus of each manwanthara are as follows:

1. Swayambhuva Manu  2. Swarochisha  3. Utthama  4. Thaamasa   5. Raivatha   6. Chaakshusha   7. Vaivasvatha   8. Saavarni  9. Dakshasaavarni  10. Brahmasaavarni   11. Dharmasaavarni    12. Rudrasaavarni    13.Ruchi  14. Indrasaavarni

Our present Manu is the son of Vivaswaan or Sun. For each manvanthara there is one Indra and the name of the Indra of this manu is Purandaran. Saptharshis also are different in each manvanthara and  Vasishta, Kaashyapa, Atri, Jamadagni, Gauthama, Vishvaamitra and Bhardwaaja are the saptharhis (seven sages) of this manvanthara.

Manu Smruthi or laws of Manu are one of the nineteen Dharamshasthras. It covers all aspects of life.

The first parents of this universe are Swaymbhuvamanu and Shatharoopa. After the srushti or creation of this couple, Brahma Deva never worried about creation. It happened and happening by itself. Vishnu Bhagavan sustains it and of course, Shiva Bhagavan takes care of the dissolution of every creature born. After the initial creation, Brahma goes into samaadhi. That is why there are very few temples built for Brahma and people do not invoke Brahma during poojaas. Vishnu Bhagavan and Shiva Bhagavan along with Yoga maaya or Bhagavathi is constantly remembered and worshipped.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Bhaktha Prahlada's previous life

5/7/09 In Bhagavad Gita Bhagavan said:    "Antha kale cha smaran mukthva kalebaram ya: prayaathi sa madbhaavam yaathi naasthi athra samshaya:"   "One who thinks of me at the time of death will attain me. This is beyond doubt."   Also Bhagavan clarifies further by saying:  "What you are thinking at the time of your death shapes your next janma because you would have meditated or continuously thought about that for a long time in your life and because of that vaasana you would be able to think only of that."   In Bhagavatham Jadabharatha's story illustrates this point. Bharatha, son of Rishabha Deva  was a great devotee of Bhagavan. But he was deeply attached to a deer and ended up thinking of it at the time of death. He was born as a deer and later got a human janma and got salvation.   It is interesting to note that Bhaktha Prahlada was born as an Asura, as the son of the greatest enemy of Vishnu Bhaga...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...
