Auspicious Acronym

7/6/08

I saw a slokam that helps us to remember the names of 18 puraanaas. It was interesting to read and I remembered how we used to make small words and phrases to remember the name and groups of chemicals, structures and reaction mechanisms when we were students. Here is the acronym for 18 puraanaas:

MAdwayam BHAdwayam chaiva BRAthrayam VA chathushtayam

NA LIM PA AGNI puraaanaani  KOO SKA m GAARUDAM eva cha

This means there are two (dwayam) puraanaas starting with letter MA- mathsya puraanam and Maarkandeaya puraanam

Another two starting with BHA-  Bhavishya puraanam and Bhaagavatha puraanam

Three starting with BRA - Brahma puraanam, Brahmaanda puraanam, Brahmavaivartha puraanam

Four starting with VA- Vaaraaha puraanam, Vaamana puraanam, Vaayu puraanam and Vishnu Puraanam

One puraanam of each starting with NA, LIM, PA, AGNI- Naaradeeya puraanam, Limgapuraanam, Padma puraanam and Agni puraanam.

KOO and SKA stands for Koorma puraanam and Skanda puraanam.

GAAARUDAM is for Garuda puraanam.

So,

madwayam bhadwayam chaiva brathrayam va chathushtayam
nalimpagni puraanaani kooskam gaarudameva cha

മദ്വയം ഭദ്വയം ചൈവ ബ്രത്രയം വ ചതുഷ്ടയം
നാലിംപഗ്നി പുരാണാനി കൂസ്കാം ഗാരുഡമേവ

can be chanted as a sloka. There is a risk that we may  forget the acronym. Remember the old man who made knots in his clothes to remind him of the items to be bought from the market, but forgot the items represented by each knot, while he stood before the vendor?

I will conclude this with some other interesting acronyms that come to my mind:

To be smart is to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, with a Timeframe.

Together Everyone Achieves More is what is a TEAM

NATO is No Action, Talks Only

and finally two more: LOVE: Let us say Om for the Virtual ( in Maya world)) and Eternal nourishment of our soul and let us do Namaskaaram to the GOD, who is the Generator, Operator and Destroyer of this Universe.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Bhaktha Prahlada's previous life

5/7/09 In Bhagavad Gita Bhagavan said:    "Antha kale cha smaran mukthva kalebaram ya: prayaathi sa madbhaavam yaathi naasthi athra samshaya:"   "One who thinks of me at the time of death will attain me. This is beyond doubt."   Also Bhagavan clarifies further by saying:  "What you are thinking at the time of your death shapes your next janma because you would have meditated or continuously thought about that for a long time in your life and because of that vaasana you would be able to think only of that."   In Bhagavatham Jadabharatha's story illustrates this point. Bharatha, son of Rishabha Deva  was a great devotee of Bhagavan. But he was deeply attached to a deer and ended up thinking of it at the time of death. He was born as a deer and later got a human janma and got salvation.   It is interesting to note that Bhaktha Prahlada was born as an Asura, as the son of the greatest enemy of Vishnu Bhaga...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...
