Even though Krishna has 16,008 wives, only the names of eight wives are well known. These eight wives correspond to the eight Prakruthis of one Purusha. Pandit Babu Purnendu Narain Sinha's interpretation is as follows:
1. Rukmini Devi corresponds to Moolaprakruthi or Primordial nature.
She is the avataar of Mahalakshmi and was born as Vidarbha King Bheeshmaka's daughter. She was supposed to marry Shishupaala and Krishna snatched her just before the swayamvaram.
2. Jaambavathi Devi - Jaambavathi corresponds to Mahat tatwam or Cosmic principle .
She is Jaambavaan's daughter and was given to Krishna as a gift when He went and siezed the Syamanthaka jewel from Jaambavaan after 28 days of boxing with him. Only on the 28th day Jaambavan realized that he was fighting with none other than his favorite Lord Raamaa's another form.
.
3. Sathyabhaama corresponds to Ahamkaaram or Ego
Sathyabhaama is Satraajit's daughter. Satraajit is the king who got the syamanthaka jewel from Soorya Bhagavan.
Next 5 wives corresponds to Pancha bhoothaas.
4. Kaalindi corresponds to Aakaasha or ether.
Kaalindi is the daughter of Soorya Bhagavan and also river Yamuna personified. Touched by her deep devotion Krishna married her.
5. Mitravinda corresponds to Vaayu or air.
Mitravinda is the sister of the Avanthi Kings Vinda and Anuvinda. Krishna defeated them and married Mitravinda.
6. Sathya corresponds to Agni or fire.
Sathya is also known as Nagnajithi, daughter of the Kosala King Nagnajith. Krishna married Sathya by controlling seven horses simutaneously.
7. Bhadra corresponds to jalam or water.
