Krishna and Karna

Krishna and Karna

4/17/08

A story about the importance of not procrastinating a good
action. Several people may have experienced the guilty feeling of
delaying a good deed and then missing the chance to help somebody. I
have done that a few times and felt very bad later.

Once Karna was getting ready to take an oil bath. He had oil in a
beautiful golden container studded with all the nine type of jewels.
(navaratna khachitham) He started applying oil on his body with his
right hand, from the container in his left hand.  Meanwhile our beloved Krishna
came there to talk about something to Karna and saw him getting ready
for his ceremonial oil bath. He saw the beautiful container in
Karna's hand and asked him:

"Karna, I have never seen such a beautiful
container. When you finish applying oil, can you give me that?"

Karna, with out hesitating for a moment,  gave the golden bowl to
Krishna with his left hand. Krishna did not expect him to react so
quickly and in no time got the bowl in his hand. After receiving it,
Krishna asked: Karna,

"Thank you very much. But, why did you give such
a wonderful gift with your left hand? Isn't it proper to give with
your right hand?

Karna replied: Krishna, I did not want any delay in giving you the
beautiful golden bowl you asked because when you decide to give
something, you have to give immediately. If I take the time to
transfer the bowl from my left hand to the right hand, I may rethink
about my decision and may decide not to part with it. That is the only
reason I gave you with left hand and not because of lack of respect
for you.

Krishna was very pleased to know his daanasheelam or attitude towards
gift -giving. He gave back the bowl to Karna, blessed him and left.
Krishna need not ask Karna for a golden bowl studded with jewels.
He owns everything in this world. But he did this only to test Karna's
kindness and to show us the importance of doing all good deeds
with out delay. Krishna wants to show us that we do not have to wait
for a muhoortham or auspicious time for an act of kindness, for helping
somebody in need, or giving away something. Karna did not even
follow the tradition and formality of giving a gift to the Lord of the
Universe and Krishna appreciated the reason for his hasty action.

May God bless us to take right decisions at the right time to help
others and ourselves.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Bhaktha Prahlada's previous life

5/7/09 In Bhagavad Gita Bhagavan said:    "Antha kale cha smaran mukthva kalebaram ya: prayaathi sa madbhaavam yaathi naasthi athra samshaya:"   "One who thinks of me at the time of death will attain me. This is beyond doubt."   Also Bhagavan clarifies further by saying:  "What you are thinking at the time of your death shapes your next janma because you would have meditated or continuously thought about that for a long time in your life and because of that vaasana you would be able to think only of that."   In Bhagavatham Jadabharatha's story illustrates this point. Bharatha, son of Rishabha Deva  was a great devotee of Bhagavan. But he was deeply attached to a deer and ended up thinking of it at the time of death. He was born as a deer and later got a human janma and got salvation.   It is interesting to note that Bhaktha Prahlada was born as an Asura, as the son of the greatest enemy of Vishnu Bhaga...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...
