Kurooramma and namajapam

6/17/08

This is the story of a very pious Nambudiri woman called Kurooramma
and a great Guruvayurappa devotee Vilwamangalam Swamiyar.

As per our Hindu belief, prayer should be done after taking shower and
wearing clean clothes. Actually cleaning is applied to mind as well.
Scriptures insist that we should pray with a clear mind and clean
body. Because of this aachaaram or rule, women usually do not say
their prayers during their monthly periods. They stay away from areas
where poojas and bhajans are done. Of course no where in scriptures
uttering of God's name or naamajapam is prohibited during any time.
Naamam can be chanted " shuchir va ashuchir va sarvaavashtaasu
sarvada", means clean or dirty, one can chant naamam all the time. But
usually women take those six or seven days as good excuse to miss
prayers with out guilt.

Kurooramma used to do naama japam ( only naamam) with out any
hesitation during this "inauspicious" time too. Vilawamangalam
Swamiyar heard about this and was very upset that she was doing
naamajapam during this time with out hesitation. He worried that she
might be setting a bad example for all other devotees. So one day
during one of her inauspicious time Vilwamangalm happened to visit her
house and he heard her chanting naamam. He noticed that the paayasam
usually made by her was missing that day and he guessed the reason. He
was very disturbed to hear her loud chanting of naamam.

He asked Kurooramma's servant Madhavi (Kurooramma was standing far
behind the door paying respect to Vilwamangalam. In those days
Nambudiri women were not supposed to see any other men than their own
brothers and husbands and usually all the conversation happened
through a maid servant or children.)

" I heard that Kurooramma is chanting naamam even during the
inauspicious time of the month and can you ask her why she is
doing that, setting a bad example to all younger devotees".

Kurooramma told the servant,

" Madhavi, please ask Vilwamangalam whether he can assure
me that I will not die during my periods. If he can give an
assurance that death will not touch any woman during that time,
I will give up chanting. As long as I do not know about the uncertain
death walking towards me, I have to chant naamam to greet
Yamadeva and then say good bye to him and go and join
my Krishna. Yamadeva lets only people with namam in their lips or mind
to go past him towards Krishna."

Vilwamangalam did not have an answer and he did namaskaaram to
Kurooramma and to his great surprise, he saw Baalagopaalan smiling and
waving at him holding Kurooramma's mundu or dhothi.

This story leaves us with absolutely no excuse not to think of Him any
day of our short life! Let Guruvayurappan not make us find different
excuses to forget Him! Let Him make us think of Him for thousands and
thousands of reasons.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Bhaktha Prahlada's previous life

5/7/09 In Bhagavad Gita Bhagavan said:    "Antha kale cha smaran mukthva kalebaram ya: prayaathi sa madbhaavam yaathi naasthi athra samshaya:"   "One who thinks of me at the time of death will attain me. This is beyond doubt."   Also Bhagavan clarifies further by saying:  "What you are thinking at the time of your death shapes your next janma because you would have meditated or continuously thought about that for a long time in your life and because of that vaasana you would be able to think only of that."   In Bhagavatham Jadabharatha's story illustrates this point. Bharatha, son of Rishabha Deva  was a great devotee of Bhagavan. But he was deeply attached to a deer and ended up thinking of it at the time of death. He was born as a deer and later got a human janma and got salvation.   It is interesting to note that Bhaktha Prahlada was born as an Asura, as the son of the greatest enemy of Vishnu Bhaga...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...
