Ananthashaayin and YashOda

11/3/09

One day Maatha Yasoda was talking to other Gopikaas about all the famous Vishnu Kshethras in Bhaaratha. Krishna was playing by her side with other Gopaas and elder brother Balarama.

Maatha Yasoda expressed her desire to see Vishnu Bhgavaan as Sheshashaayin or one who rests on the snake Anantha.( like Vishnu Bhagavaan's pose in Vaikundha). Krishna heard mother's conversation and planned a little scene.

He told Balarama that He would like to do wrestling with him. Balarama was surprised that Krishna who was much smaller in size than him and wanted to do wrestling with him. But he did not want to disappoint his little brother. So they started wrestling and this time Krishna was more powerful than Balarama's expectation. After a few minutes Krishna toppled him, made him lie down on his stomach and He Himself lay on his back just like Vishnu Bhgavaan's pose on Anantha.

Yasodaji looked and for a second saw Balarama as Anantha, the divine snake  and Krishna as Lord Vishnu exactly in the same Vaikundha pose. In a moment Yasodaji saw little Krishna lying on His brother Balarama. A few times this Vishnu roopam or form on Ananatha and Krishna form on Balarama alternated through her eyes. Then she ran and took Krishna in her hands and helped Balarama to get up from the ground.

Nobody made any comments becasue it was all only a game of the children. But only Yasodaji and Krishna understood the meaning of the game and in a few minutes even Yasodaji forgot what she saw. The all- knowing Bhagavaan smiled and ran to the other side of the Gokulam followed by all other children.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moons in one year = 12   So n

Chanting can be done like in the naamaavali: Om Vishnave Nama:, Om Janaaardanaaya nama:, Om padmanaabhaaya nama: etc. We will try to analyze the meaning of each name.
