Come and take life on earth

10/7/09

This is a story from Padmapuranam.

Once Narada Muni came to see Devendra. While talking about a planet  he visited recently, he told Indraji:

"I am coming from earth. There Yayathi Maharaj, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu has completed 100 Aswamedha Yajnaas. He is one of the most righteous kings that ever ruled earth."

As usual these words of Narada put fear in Indraji's mind. He was worried whether King Yaayhti will do more yagaas and satkarmaas and become eligible for the post of Indra like King's own great father, King Nahusha.

Indraji thought of a devious plan. He sent his charioteer Mathali to King Yayathi to tell him how great  heaven is and Indraji was welcoming King Yayathi to heaven to stay with him. He specifically told Mathali to tell the King that there was no old age, disease or death in heaven since they received Amrutham after churning the milky ocean. Indraji was even ready to share with the most precious amrutham or nectar to attract King Yayathi to heaven so that he would not further do any satkarmaas and yaagaas on earth.

Yayathi thanked Mathali and told him to tell Indraji this message:

"Indraji, thank you for your invitation and good will. But I have decided to make this earth a better place than heaven by sharing the nectar of Namasankeerthanam with every body. This nectar is different from the nectar you have and you can never enjoy the sweetness and goodness of this unless you are born on earth. Once you start drinking this nectar, you will never give up the habit of drinking this. Actually when you drink this you realize that this place is far better than heaven because when the results of your good karmaas are exhausted, you guys have to come back to earth and do this namasnakeerthanam to attain moksham or salvation. But we are already here and just by chanting His naamam we will reach Him. So let me invite you here and join in our satsangam and nammasankeerthanam and drink this delicious nectar of Bhagavth naamam."

Yaathi's sincere attempt to transfrom earth to Vaikundha bothered Indraji and he envied the fortunate people on earth. He prayed Vishnu Bhgavan to give him a chance with out delay to be born on earth to enjoy the nectar of Naama sankeerthanam and attain the lotus feet of Him. He realized the transient nature of even the so called heaven and prayed for eternal happiness.
No wonder all devaas, gandharvaas, kinnarras etc and all inhabitants of all other worlds desire to be born on earth and especially to be born on earth in Kaliyuga.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...
