Dashaamam
Dashamam Kilippattu by the late Purayannoor ParamEsharan Nambudiripad is a very popular Krishnakatha among Nambudiri women of the last century. Actually it was written especially for women. Nambudiripad has followed the style of Ezhutthacchan and the work is very simple and exceptionally beautiful.
It is the idea of respected Mohanachandran Karthaji to translate this piece into English prose. He asked me whether I would be interested in doing the translation and he said he would do the transliteration of the original and then post it part by part along with the original text. With prayers, I agreed to attempt the translation. To be honest, I had more confidence in Karthaji's ability to edit my writing than in my own ability to do the translation. When it is about Bhagavaan even "abaddhaas" become "subadddhaas"- Bhaagavaan himself has said this in Bhagavatham. With that consolation and with Karthaji,s encouragement I started my humble attempt. May Bhagavaan bless us to complete this successfully and also may Bhagavaan bless those who read this with love and devotion!

ഒന്നാം അദ്ധ്യായം
ശാരികാ-കുല-മണി-മൌലിയിൽ വിളങ്ങുന്ന
ചാരു-രത്നമേ, കിളിപ്പൈതലേ, വരിക നീ.
സാരമായുള്ള മധു പഞ്ചസാരയും പാലും
പാരമായ് പ്പഴുത്തോരു കദളിപ്പഴങ്ങളും
പാരാതേ ഭുജിച്ചു നിന്നാലസ്യം കളഞ്ഞു നീ
സാരമായുള്ള കഥ ചൊല്ലുക മടിയാതെ.
ആദി-നായകൻ ജഗന്നായകൻ പരമാത്മാ
വേദ-വേദാന്ത-വേദ്യനാകിയ നാരായണൻ
യാദവാന്വയത്തിങ്കൽ കൃഷ്ണനായവതരി--
ച്ചാദരവോടുമോരോ ലീലകൾ ചെയ്തതെല്ലാം 10
വ്യക്തമായ് ഞങ്ങളോടു ചൊല്ലേണമതുകേട്ടാൽ
മുക്തിയും ലഭിച്ചീടും എന്നല്ലോ ശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളും.
മങ്കമാരുടെ വാക്യം ഇങ്ങിനെ കേട്ടനേരം
പൈങ്കിളിപ്പൈതൽതാനും അവരോടുരചെയ്താൾ :--
“കൃഷ്ണലീലകൾ കേൾപ്പാൻ നിങ്ങൾക്കു മനതാരിൽ
തൃഷ്ണയുണ്ടായതോർത്താൽ ഭാഗ്യമെന്നതേയുള്ളൂ.
ഐഹികസുഖങ്ങളും മോക്ഷവും വന്നീടുവാൻ
ദേഹികൾക്കിതുപോലെ മറ്റൊന്നില്ലറിഞ്ഞാലും.
ഇന്നിതു വിസ്തരിച്ചു ചൊല്ലുവാൻ ഓർത്തുകണ്ടാൽ
പന്നഗാധീശൻ പോലും ആളല്ലെന്നതു നൂനം. 20
എങ്കിലും ചുരുക്കി ഞാൻ ചൊല്ലുവൻ കേട്ടപോലെ
പങ്കജ-മിഴിമാരേ, കേട്ടുകൊള്ളുവിൻ നിങ്ങൾ.
വാരണ-വദനനും വാണിയും വിരിഞ്ചനും
മാര-നാശനൻ താനും ഇന്ദ്രാദി-ദേവന്മാരും
നാരദനാദി-മുനിശ്രേഷ്ഠരും ദ്വിജന്മാരും
പാരാതെ അനുഗ്രഹം നൽകേണം നമുക്കിപ്പോൾ.
സാരസേക്ഷണ ജയ മാധവ ജയ ജയ
സാരസോദ്ഭവ-മുഖ-ദേവ-വന്ദിത ജയ
ഭക്തന്മാരുടെ ചിത്തേ വാഴും നിൻ പദാംബുജം
ഭക്തവത്സല പോറ്റീ സന്തതം വണങ്ങുന്നേൻ. 30
നിന്തിരുവടിയുടെ ലീലകൾ ചൊല്ലീടുവാൻ
അന്തർമോഹേന തുടങ്ങീടുന്നോരടിയനെ
വാക്കിനു വേണ്ടും ഗുണം ഒക്കെയും വരുത്തുവാൻ
പാൽക്കടൽ-വർണ്ണൻ കനിവോടനുഗ്രഹിയ് ക്കേണം.
എങ്കിലോ വഴിപോലെ കേട്ടുകൊള്ളുവിൻ നിങ്ങൾ
പങ്കജ-നേത്രൻ-തന്റെ ലീലകൾ ചൊല്ലീടുന്നേൻ.”

"നിന്തിരുവടി അരുൾ ചെയ്തൊരു കഥകൾ കേ--
ട്ടന്തരങ് ഗത്തിൽ നമുക്കജ്ഞാനം എല്ലാം തീർന്നു.
ചിൽപ്പുരുഷന്റെ കഥ കേൾപ്പതിന്നഭിലാഷം
ഉൾപ്പൂവിൽ വർദ്ധിയ് ക്കയാൽ ഒന്നു ഞാൻ ചോദിയ് ക്കുന്നൂ :---
സോമവംശവും സൂര്യവംശവും വിസ്തരിച്ചു
സാമോദം ഭവാനരുൾ ചെയ്തു ഞാൻ കേട്ടുവല്ലോ.
പുണ്യവാനായ യദുതന്നുടെ വംശം തന്നിൽ
പുണ്ഡരീകാക്ഷനായ മാധവൻ ജഗന്നാഥൻ
വന്നവതരിച്ചോരോ ലീലകൾ ചെയ്തതെല്ലാം
ഇന്നരുൾ ചെയ്കവേണം എന്നോടു ദയാനിധേ. 50

A few women welcomed the most beautiful parrot who was shining like a precious jewel on the crown of the whole kingdom of parrots. They told her to refresh herself by eating the honey, sugar, milk, ripe Kadali bananas etc. that they offered to her and they requested her to narrate to them the most auspicious story without any hesitation.

Kindly tell us clearly all the stories of the First and foremost Lord who is also known as the Lord of the Universe, Universal Soul, Lord Narayana who is well-versed in vEda and vEdAntha—Lord Krishna who incarnated in the Yadu dynasty and performed different leelaas or sportive pastimes. According to the scriptures, those stories will lead us to liberation

When the parrot heard these words of the women, she replied to them:

You are fortunate to have this desire in your mind to listen to the sportive pastimes of Lord Krishna.

Please understand that there is nothing like this (listening to His stories) which will help humans to get their material desires as well as their desire for liberation fulfilled.

Even the Lord of the serpents, Lord Anantha (with one thousand tongues) is incapable of describing those stories in detail.

May Lord Ganesha, Goddess Sarasvathi, Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, Lord Indra and all other Gods, all sages starting from sage Narada and all brAhmaNAs bless me (for fulfilling this task) !

Because of my inner desire, I am just beginning to narrate your sportive pastimes and O, Lord, kindly bless my words with all qualities necessary for the purpose.

So, I am going to narrate the lotus-eyed Lord's pastimes and all of you, please listen carefully.

Sage Shuka started narrating the stories of Lord Krishna one by one to King Pareekshith. After some time, things became more and more clear for the king and he eloquently told the sage.

“By listening to the stories you have narrated, my mind has become free of ignorance. Because of my increased desire to listen to the stories of the Lord, I am asking you for one thing.

I heard in detail the stories of the Lunar dynasty and the Solar dynasty. O, compassionate one! now kindly tell me the pastimes of the Lotus-eyed Lord also known as MAdhava, Lord of the Universe (jagannAtha) and the one who incarnated in the blessed dynasty of Yadu.
