മഹാഭാഗവതം — ദശമം — അദ്ധ്യായം 6
നന്ദഗോപനും പഥി ചിന്തിച്ചീടിനാൻ:-- "മഹാ--
ധന്യനാം വസുദേവൻ ചൊല്ലിയാലൊക്കുമല്ലൊ.
എന്തുവാൻ മമ പുത്രനാപത്തു വരുന്നതു ?
ഹന്ത ദൈവമേ, മമ മാനസം ഉരുകുന്നു."
എന്നെല്ലാം നിരൂപിച്ചു പന്നഗശയനനെ--
ത്തന്നുള്ളിൽ ഉറപ്പിച്ചു വേഗേന നടകൊണ്ടാൻ.
അക്കാലം പിശാചിയാം പൂതന ബാലന്മാരെ
ഒക്കവേ കൊന്നീടുവാൻ, കംസന്റെ നിയോഗത്താൽ
ഓരോരോ ദിക്കിൽച്ചെന്നു കണ്ട ബാലകന്മാരെ--
പ്പാരാതെ കൊന്നുകൊന്നു നന്ദഗോകുലം പുക്കാൾ. 10
സുന്ദരീവേഷം പൂണ്ടു മന്ദമായ് നടന്നവൾ
നന്ദഗോപന്റെ പുരം പുക്കിതു യദൃച് ഛ യായ്.
സുന്ദരിയുടെ രൂപശോഭകണ്ടൊരു ഗോപ--
തന്വിമാരെല്ലാവരും സ്തബ്ധരായ് നിന്നുപോയി.
മന്ദഹാസവും തൂകിപ്പൂതനതാനും നന്ദ--
നന്ദനൻതന്നെയെടുത്തങ് കത്തിൽ കിടത്തിനാൾ.
തന്നുടെ കാലൻതന്നെ നന്ദിച്ചു മടിയിൽ വെ--
ച്ചുന്നതസ്തനങ്ങളും കൊടുത്താൾ കൃശോദരി.
"പാപിയാം ഇവളെ ഞാൻ കൊല്ലുവ"നെന്നുറച്ചു
കോപേന മുകുന്ദനും മുലയും കുടിച്ചു തേ. 20
മോദമോടവൾ ചെറ്റു വസിച്ചോരനന്തരം
വേദന സഹിയാഞ്ഞു ബാലനോടുരചെയ്താൾ:—
"അയ് യയ്യോ കുമാരക! നീയെന്നെച്ചതിച്ചിതോ ?
മെയ് യെല്ലാം വിറയ് ക്കുന്നൂ, വേദന പെരുകുന്നൂ.
മുഞ്ച മുഞ്ച മേ കുചം ! ചഞ്ചലവിലോചന !
പഞ്ചത്വം വരാനുള്ള കാലവും മമ വന്നൂ.
ഇത്തരം പറഞ്ഞിട്ടും വിട്ടീല കുമാരകൻ;
സത്വരം ബാലൻതന്നെത്താഡിച്ചാൾ തെരുതെരെ.
ഹസ്തങ്ങൾ തകർന്നിതു, ബാലനു കൊണ്ടീലേതും
ചിത്രമെന്നോർത്തവളും വാവിട്ടങ്ങലറിനാൾ. 30
പൂതനയുടെ മുലപ്പാലോടുകൂടെത്തന്നെ
ചേതനകൂടിപ്പാനം ചെയ് തിതു നാരായണൻ.
അന്നേരം അവൾതാനും തന്നുടെ രൂപംപൂണ്ടു
നിന്നുടൻ ഒന്നലറിച്ചത്തങ്ങു വീണീടിനാൾ.
എന്തൊരു ശബ്ദമെന്നു ചിന്തിച്ചു ജനങ്ങളും
അന്ധരായോരോ ദിശിമണ്ടിനാർ ഭയത്തോടും.
ഘോരയാം പിശാചിതൻ ദേഹവും അതുനേരം
നേരോടെ പതിനഞ്ചു നാഴികയുണ്ടു നീളം.
വണ്ണവും അവളുടലഞ്ചു നാഴികയല്ലോ
വർണ്ണവും കാളമേഘം തന്നോടു തുല്യമത്രേ. 40
ഘോരമാം അവളുടെ ദേഹം വീണൊരു ദിക്കിൽ
പാറകൾ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളും ഒക്കവേ പൊടിഞ്ഞുപോയ്.
പൂതനാദേഹത്തിന്മേൽ ക്രീഡിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്ന
കൈതവബാലൻതന്നെക്കണ്ടോരു ഗോപിമാരും
മണ്ടിച്ചെന്നെടുത്തുകൊണ്ടിങ്ങു പോന്നിതു മോദാൽ;
കണ്ടവരെല്ലാവരും ഒന്നിച്ചു തഴുകിനാർ.
ഗോമൂത്രംകൊണ്ടു കുളിപ്പിച്ചിതു കുമാരനെ
ഗോമയചൂർണ്ണംകൊണ്ടു ധൂളനമതും ചെയ് തു.
ഗോപുച്ഛം കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ മേലെല്ലാം ഉഴിഞ്ഞിതു;
ദീപവും ഉഴിഞ്ഞിതു ബകുളപത്രത്തോടും. 50
രക്ഷയും ചെയ് തു പിന്നെ *വിഷ്ണുപഞ്ജരംകൊണ്ടു
തൽക്ഷണം യശോദതൻ മുലയും നൽ കീടിനാൾ.
അന്നേരം നന്ദഗോപൻ വന്നിതു കണ്ടനേരം
തന്നുള്ളിൽ നിനച്ചിതു ശൌരിതന്നുടെ വാക്യം.
പിന്നെയും നിരൂപിച്ചാൻ:-- "എന്നുടെ സുതനിവൻ
ധന്യരാം ദേവന്മാരിലേകനായ് വരുമവൻ.
അല്ലായ് കിലിവൾതന്നെക്കൊന്നതു ചേരുന്നില്ല
വല്ലതെന്നാലും പരിപാലിയ് ക്കും നാരായണൻ. '
ഇത്തരം വിചാരിച്ചു പൂതനയുടെ ദേഹം
ശസ്ത്രങ്ങൾകൊണ്ടു ഖണ്ഡിച്ചെത്രയും ചെറുതാക്കി 60
വഹ്നിയിൽ ദഹിപ്പിച്ചാരന്നേരം നല്ലോരകിൽ--
തന്നുടെ ഗന്ധംപോലെ ധൂമഗന്ധവും വന്നൂ.
കൊല്ലുവാനെന്നാകിലും മെല്ലവേ മടിയിൽ വെ--
ച്ചുല്ലാസമോടു മുലകൊടുത്ത നിമിത്തമായ്
ദുഷ്ടയാം പിശാചിയായുള്ളൊരു പൂതനയ് ക്കു
പെട്ടെന്നു ലഭിച്ചിതു സൽഗ്ഗതിയറിഞ്ഞാലും.
സ്നേഹേന മുല കൊടുത്തീടിന ഗോപിമാർക്കു--
മാഹന്ത ദേവകിയ് ക്കുമെന്തു ചൊൽവതു പിന്നെ ?
പൂതനാമോക്ഷമിതു പാടുന്ന ജനങ്ങൾക്കും
പ്ര്രീതിയോടിതു കേട്ടീടുന്നോരു ജനങ്ങൾക്കും 70
ചേതസി വിഷ്ണുഭക്തി വർദ്ധിച്ചു വരുമല്ലോ;
പൂതനാമോക്ഷം ആറാം അദ്ധ്യായം ഉരചെയ് തേൻ.

Chapter 6, lines 1-6

On his way back, NandagOpa started thinking:
" Usually the blessed VasudEvA's words become true. What danger can happen to my son? Oh, God! my mind is melting (touched by the fire of fear)".
Thinking like this and firmly meditating on the Lord who reclines on a sacred serpent, nandagOpa walked home fast.
Lines 7-18

During that time, the female demon Puthana, as per the order from Kamsa, started killing all the children in the land. She went from place to place and killed all the children she saw and soon reached Gokulam also.
She disguised herself as a beautiful woman and casually entered NandagOpA's house. All the gOpikAs were stunned to see the beautiful form of her. Puthana carried and kept NandA's son on her lap, with an enchanting smile on her face. Then she, a woman with a slender waist, started feeding her own (future) killer through her big breasts.

"I will kill this sinful woman”—with this determination angry Mukunda sucked at her breasts. She remained happy for some time and then with unbearable pain, said to the boy:
" O, young boy! Are you deceiving me? My body is trembling and my pain keeps increasing. O, Boy with constantly moving eyes! Let go of, leave my breasts. My time to merge with the five elements (time for death) has come."
In spite of Puthana’s saying like this, he (Mukunda) did not leave her alone. Then she started hitting him again and again. She was surprised to learn that instead of the boy getting hurt, only her hands got hurt.
Then she started screaming loudly with pain. Lord Narayana, along with the breast milk, sucked her life out of her. At that moment, she changed back to her original demonic form, got up and screaming very loudly, fell down dead.
Lines 35-46

People in that area wondered what sound it was and out of fear, blindly started running in different directions. That terrible demon's body was, with out exaggeration, about fifteen yOjanas long. The breadth of her body was about five yOjanas and her complexion was as black as the darkest clouds that gather at time of PRaLayam.
Rocks and trees present in that area where the huge woman had fallen down, were all crushed under her weight. When GOpikAs saw the ingenious boy playing on the body of Puthana, they ran to Him lifted Him and brought Him back. Everybody who saw this, caressed the little child at the same time.
Lines 47- 52

They gave Him a healing bath with the urine of cows and spread the dried and powdered cow dung all over His body. Using the tail of the cow, they dusted His body. Then they did "aarathi" or worshipped Him with a lighted lamp and Bakula leaves. They chanted Vishnupanjaram for His total protection and soon after that, YaShOda fed Him with her breast-milk.
Lines 53-72

When NandagOpa came home and saw all this, he remembered Shouri's (VasudEvA's ) words. He kept thinking:
"This son of mine is one who belongs to the blessed DEvAs. Otherwise there is no explanation for His killing of this demonic woman. Whatever happens, Lord Narayana is there to protect us."
Thinking like this, Nanda had his assistants cut PuthanA's body into small pieces and they put them in burning fire. Then lot of fragrant smoke emerged from her burning body.
Even though Puthana’s intention was to kill the Lord, she had kept Krishna on her lap and had happily fed him. This is the only reason why a cruel female demon like Puthana got salvation (and her body burned with sacred fragrance). If this is the case of demonic being, what can we say about the good luck of GOpikas and DEvaki who fed him with love and good intentions!
Devotion to Vishnu Bhagavan will keep increasing in the minds of those who sing this song of "salvation of Puthana" and those who listen to this poem.
Thus I have finished narrating chapter 6 entitled "Salvation of Puthana” or “Puthanamoksham.”
