Ramayanaparam -21, Greatness of Namam

One more story about the greatness of Rama naamam. This again happened just before the return of Lord Rama to his swadhaamam or Vaikundham. Before getting ready to leave, Lord called a big meeting of all the citizens of Ayodhya and everybody had assembled in the Durbar and was waiting for Sri Rama to appear along with Sitadevi. Sathrughna was in charge of greeting the respected guests.

After some time, Maharshi Duravasas entered the durbar, took a seat and started meditating on Rama. Narada also was present. With in a few minutes Lord Rama came with Sitadevi and everybody in the audience stood up to show respect. Duravasas did not know and was still meditating. So Narada wake him up from samadhi and told him about the arrival of Lord Rama. He woke up and saw that everybody in the audience except him had chandan thilak and garland. So durvasas asked Narada why he was not given both. Then as usual, Narada told him that Sathrughna was in charge and he might have done this to dishonor Durvasas. Of course Durvasa was anger personified and aksed Rama for explanation.

Rama was looking for Sathrughna and could not find him anywhere. Also could not find Hanuman anywhere there. So he went to Hanuman's abode and asked Anjanadevi and asked whether Hanuman was there. To his surprise, Anjanadevi said that Hanuman was inside the house and she would call  him. Hanuman came and bowed in front of him with folded hands and waited for Rama's order. Then Rama asked whether he knew where Sathrughna was. Hanuman said: "Lord! Sathrughna is inside, but he cannot come outside now."

Rama told Hanuman that he had to see Sathrughna that moment and had to punish him for dishonoring Durvasas. Humbly Hanuman told Rama that, with all respect, he would disobey his order to bring Sathrughna outside. Rama could not believe his ears and was extremely angry and surprised at Hanuman's words. He emphatically told that He wanted Sahthrughna outside at that moment and if not Hanuman should get ready for a fight.

Hanuma's reply was unimaginable to Rama, Hanuman himself and for all of us! He said; "Lord! I cannot obey your order. I am ready for the fight. Defeat me and take Shartrughna". Rama got ready for the fight and all the devaas, sages and devotees begged Rama to drop the idea of harming Hanuman. If Hanuman was killed, then would ever be any devotees left in this world? That was their concern. But Rama's decision was a decision and nohing could change that. Rama took the arrows and aimed at Hanuman and Hanuman with folded hands stood there chanting : Jai Sri Ram! Jai Jai Sri Ram!. Some arrows went around Hanuman three times and came back to Rama and some arrows fell on Hanuman as beautiful, fragrant flowers! For the first and last time and for once Rama's arrows failed!

Rama looked around and saw Narada smiling. Narada said: Prabho! before you leave for Vailkundham, I wanted to show the world the greatness of your naamam through Hanuman. Now all devotees know that your namam protects your devotees even from your own arrows. Even you are helpless when your namam protects a devotee. So even after you disappear, your namam will protect the devotees.

Hare! Rama ! Hare! Rama! Harer naamaiva kevalam
kalou naasthyeva naasthyeva  nasthyeva gathiranyatha

"The only aashrayam or gathi we have in Kalikaalam is namasamkeerthanam"

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moons in one year = 12   So n

16 names of Lord Vishnu

16 names of Lord Vishnu 4/26/08 These are 16 names of Vishnu to be remembered at different occasions. It is said that sabda (sabda), sparsha (touch), roopa (form), rasa (taste), gandha (smell) and the positive energy or vibration coexist with words. Repeated chanting of each word with bhava creates different results in our body since effort to utter each word uses different muscles and brings different effect in the saadhaka. Chanting can be done like in the naamaavali: Om Vishnave Nama:, Om Janaaardanaaya nama:, Om padmanaabhaaya nama: etc. We will try to analyze the meaning of each name.
