Rama- Raavana -yudham was progressing and Indrajit, Ravana's eldest son was fighting relentlessly with Lakshmana. At one point, he used Brahmasthram and Lakshmana fell unconscious in the battlefield.
Seeing Lakshmana lying there with absolutely no movement, Raama was grief stricken and wept like a child. The following verse glorifies the divine love between the brothers:
Deshe deshe kalathraani deshe deshe cha baandhava:
tham thu desham na pashyaami yathra bhraatha sahodara:
"In any part of the world you can meet a woman, marry her and make her your wife (kalathram) or marital relationship can be established anywhere. Also we can find other relatives in any part of the world, but I have not seen any place where we can find a brother (bhraatha)or brotherhood is one of the associations we are blessed with at birth ( from the same udaram or stomach)".
Later Lakshmana was brought back to his senses with the medicine brought by Hanuman from the Himalaya.
The two people most loved by Rama were Sita and Lakshmana. Unfortunately he had to do "parythyaagam" (renounce ) of both. He had to renounce pregnant Sitadevi in the forest. Also just before his own return to Vaikundham Rama had to do parithyaagam of Lakshmana also for breaking a rule.
Raamaayana is a story of the hardships and suffering of the hero Rama, his wife Sita, His father Dasharatha, His mother Kousalya, Sumithra, all His brothers and their wives. The only important character who did not suffer in any way was Hanuman. Why? Hanuman loved the naamam more than the Naami! (Raama). So nothing bothered Him, even Raama's disappearance from the world.
He did nto have to sacrifice anything because he was not attached to anything other than naamam. He felt that every action was an opportunity to serve the Lord and saw the sacrifices as privileges.

I bow to Aanjaneya with folded hands, who jumped across the deep ocean in a playful manner. I bow to him who picked up the fire of grief from the daughter of Janaka and used the same fire to burn Lanka.
