Vivekananda Swamiji talks about spiritual love triangle. We all know about the material love triangle where three people are involved in a romantic relationship which would invariably trigger jealousy and hatred. Let us look into the spiritual love triangle where the love from all angles is directed towards God and the love that triggers only positive sentiments in anybody.
A triangle has obviously three angles. This spiritual love-triangle also has three angles namely:
1. Love or loving devotion or Bhakthi knows no bargaining.
2. Love or loving devotion or Bhakthi knows no fear.
3. Love or loving devotion or Bhakthi knows no rival.
When love knows no bargaining, that love becomes "nishkkaama bhakthi" or loving Bhagavan for love's sake and not to fulfill any of our desires. It is also called paraa-bhakthi. This means that one angle of this triangle is unconditional love.
Vivekananda Swamiji illustrates a nice story about this angle of Bhakthi triangle. Once a king went for hunting and he met a very happy, contented, pure and wise sage there. King wanted to give this noble soul a nice and valuable present. So king asked the sage what would he like to receive as a gift from him. Sage did not even bother to think what he wanted because he was fully contented and did not need anything. He was happy with all the comforts nature gave him, all the food nature gave him and the pristine and pure environment nature gave him. How can he ask for anything from anybody?
King pressed him again to accept some gift from him and told him:
"Respected sage, just for my own benefit, please come to the palace and accept a gift."
Finally the sage went o the palace with the king and king brought lot of valuable gifts and put them at his feet. Then he prostrated at his feet and told him:
"Oh ! sage, accept this and bless me to have more wealth, more children, more power and fame."
Sage got up and before leaving the hall he said:
"Maharaja! I do not beg to beggars. You are a beggar and how in the world you can give me something? Please never come after me again.".
King's love for the sage was only to feed his own desires. !.
We will explore the second angle of the triangle in the next post.
May Bhagavan's endless compassion raise us from which ever state of Bhakthi we are, to the state of Nishkkama Bhaktha, filled with unconditional love for Him! May He bless us not to demean the divine relationship with Him, the "all loving".
