MahAbhAratham Three Story of two dogs

It is interesting to note that Mahabharatham starts and ends with the story of a dog. Let us go to the beginning of Mahabharatham. With the Upaparvam or subsidiary section known as Paushya parvam, story of Mahabharatham starts. King Parikshith had four sons namely JanamEjayan, ShrutasEnan, UgrasEnan and BheemasEnan. They were doing the yaagam called Sarpasathram to punish the whole snake species  as a retaliation to the heinous action of the poisonous snake Thakashaka who killed their father King Parikshith. One day a dog came in to the Yaagashaala or the building where the worship was going on. Beaten severely by King JanamEjaya's brothers, the dog came running to his mother, the divine dog Sarama. Sarama asked him whether he did something mischievous to deserve this kind of punishment and the dog said he did not do anything and he was beaten for no mistake of his. This made Sarama angry and she cursed King Janamejaya: "an unknown calamity will befall on your family". After this incident Maharaja was worried and actually searched for a priest or purohitha who could do some Prrayaschittham or atonement  for  their wrong doing!

Described above is the opening story of Mahabharatha. From this we can see that even a dog has the power to protest against adharmam  of a king. That is why it is said that Dharmam is the foundation of Mahabharatha  and the whole story is to make people realize the importance of Dharmam. With this incident of Sarama, Veda Vyasa Maharshi reinforces the saying :"Ahimsa paramao Dharma: the greatest dharma is non-violence. So the story of the dog is to emphazize that kindness should be extended to all living beings.

Now let us look at the last scene of Pandavas on earth which is called "mahaaprasthaanam". All of them and Draupadi were walking and first Draupadi fell dead, then Sahadeva, Nakula, Arjuna and Bheema. The only person left was King Yudhishtira and his dog. So Indra came there to take him to heaven and King told him that he wanted the dog also to come with him. Indra told him that dogs were not allowed in heaven. King Yudhishtira told Indra that he did not want heaven if he had to leave the  helpless dog who guarded them all it's life. The dog was dependent on him and it was adharmam to disown him for enjoying the heavenly pleasures. Suddenly dog appeared as Dharmadeva and extolled the glory of King Yudhishtira.

Through these two incidents Vedavyasa Maharshi brings out the importance of following Dharma, which is the essence of Mahaharatha. Dharmo rakshathi rakshithaa: meaning "dharma protects those who protect dharma".

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...

Bhaktha Prahlada's previous life

5/7/09 In Bhagavad Gita Bhagavan said:    "Antha kale cha smaran mukthva kalebaram ya: prayaathi sa madbhaavam yaathi naasthi athra samshaya:"   "One who thinks of me at the time of death will attain me. This is beyond doubt."   Also Bhagavan clarifies further by saying:  "What you are thinking at the time of your death shapes your next janma because you would have meditated or continuously thought about that for a long time in your life and because of that vaasana you would be able to think only of that."   In Bhagavatham Jadabharatha's story illustrates this point. Bharatha, son of Rishabha Deva  was a great devotee of Bhagavan. But he was deeply attached to a deer and ended up thinking of it at the time of death. He was born as a deer and later got a human janma and got salvation.   It is interesting to note that Bhaktha Prahlada was born as an Asura, as the son of the greatest enemy of Vishnu Bhaga...
