Story of Sukanya 1

Kashyapa Maharshi is the son of Marichi Maharshi who is the Maanasa puthra of Brahma devan. Kashyapa Maharshi married thirteen daughters out of sixteen daughters of Daksha Prajapathi. (One daughter Sathi Devi was married to Lord Shiva followed by Daksha yaagam, another daughter Swaha to Lord Agni and Swadha to Pthrus or forefathers). Vivaswan was one of the sons of Kashyapa and Adithi. Vaiavaswatha Manu is Vivaswan's son and  King Sharyathi is the son of Vaivaswatha Manu. Our heroine Sukanya is this King Sharyathi's daughter. Sukanya has a brother called Aanartthan.

King Sharyathi was very fond of her daughter and always tried to fulfill all her reasonable wishes. In due course of time she grew in to a beautiful young woman. Even though she was the beloved of the family, she was not a spoilt child. She was a highly spiritual and balanced young woman. King Sharyathi and his family along with his army camped in a forest near River Ganga. One day Sukanya, along with her friends, started exploring that beautiful forest. They roamed  around the forest enjoying the pristine beauty of nature. While walking, they saw a tall anthill. Sukanya went near the anthill and  she saw two small holes on the top. She went near it and looked through the holes and  saw something shining in the two holes. She was curious to know what it was and poked hard through the holes with a firm and thin blade of dry grass. In a moment blood started oozing out through the holes and Sukanya and her friends were scared to death. They rushed back to their cabins and did not tell anybody about what happened.

For some unknown reason, King Sharyathi and all his men started experiencing a strange discomfort in their bladder and had difficulty in emptying their bladder. Since all of them were experiencing the same disease, they could not figure out the reason.. They wondered whether it was because of a curse of a divine soul or because of some unforeseen negative forces. King asked everybody whether anybody did any harm to any divine persons living in the forest. He sent his assistants to the forest to look for some clues. They saw Chyavana Maharshi inside the anthill with his eyes blinded and bleeding. They informed king about this and king again asked whether anybody in his group was responsible for causing blindness to Chyavana Maharshi.

Sukanya came forward and told her father what happened. She explained how she poked through the holes with out realizing that there was a human being inside the anthill. She thought it was a firefly or some shining insect and did it only out of innocent curiosity.

Story will be continued.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...
