Story of Sukanya 3

From the day Sukanya became the wife of Chyavana Maharshi, she served him with utmost care and devotion. Her attitude and service rendered by her to the sage were praised even by Devaas, Kinnaraas, Gandarvaas, Yakshaas etc.

She gave bath to Maharshi in pure warm water three times a day. After bath she made him sit on the smooth bark of mango tree. Then prepared everything he needed for his pooja and worship of Devi. After that she fed him with ripe and delicious fruits she gathered from the forest trees. After food, gave him betel leaves. Evenings she massaged her feet. After the evening prayers, she will make him sleep in a comfortable bed made from tree barks and soft leaves. Eating the left over food, she will also rest until early morning to wake him up for the next day's routine. She never complained or never appeared unhappy or tired.

After several years, one day, Aswini Devaas, twin brothers who were the physicians of Devaas visited that forest. They were surprised to see Sukanya there and wanted to test her chastity or paathivrathyam. They told her:

"Hey Devi Sukanye! Why are you wasting your precious youth by serving this old, blind man in the forest? You can marry one of us and enjoy all the pleasures of heaven."

Sukanya told them:

"I am the dharmapathni or dutiful wife of Chyavana Maharshi. I will not forget my dharmam as his trusted and loving wife. You are Devaas and why are you persuading me to do adharmam? Even though he is old and blind, he means everything to me. So please do not bother me any more."

Aswini Devas were very pleased to see Sukanya's love and devotion for the sage and wanted to offer her a boon.

We will see what  boon Aswini Devaas gave to Sukanya and how that changed her and her husband's life.

Shathaabishekam

6/21/08 When is Shathaabhishekam celebrated? When it should be celebrated? We have heard about different versions of when it should be celebrated, when you complete 84 years, or when you complete 81 years and 10 months or when you complete 83 years 4 months. Shathaabhishekam is celebrated when a person sees 1000 full moons lives through 1000 full moons in his life. Since it is a mathematical calculation, there should only be one answer. Then how are we having all these three answers? (It really does not matter when you celebrate, but out of curiosity to know the reason behind the celebration, I did some research and I thought some people may share my curiosity. Of all the explanations I read I liked the one given below.)   Here is a convincing explanation based mainly on a question -answer series in Bhakthapriya magazine published by Guruvayur devaswom. For clarity, I am trying to express it as mathematically as possible.   Number of full moon...

Six elder brothers of Krishna

5/6/09 We all know that Prahlada was the son of Hiranyakashipu. According to the story in Harivamsha, Hiranyakashipu had another son called Kaalanemi. (Kalanemi appears in different demon forms in each yuga and gets killed by Lord. In Threthayuga he was Ravana's uncle.) This Kalanemi of Dwapara yuga had 6 sons who were the son's of Marichi Maharshi in their previous birth. They were born as Kalanemi's children becasue of a curse from Sage Devala. They were called shad-garbhaas and their names were Hamsa, Suvikrama, Krahta, Damana, Ripumardana and Krodhahantha.   These grandsons of Hiranyakashipu did not accept Hiranykashipu as their God and refused to chant "Hiranyaaya Nama" as instructed. Instead they did severe penance to please Brahma Devan. Brahmadevan was pleased and appeared before them and gave the boon they asked for. They did not want to get killed by any Devaas, Gandharvaas, Yakshaas or naagaas. After receiving the boons, they stayed under wat...

Bhaktha Prahlada's previous life

5/7/09 In Bhagavad Gita Bhagavan said:    "Antha kale cha smaran mukthva kalebaram ya: prayaathi sa madbhaavam yaathi naasthi athra samshaya:"   "One who thinks of me at the time of death will attain me. This is beyond doubt."   Also Bhagavan clarifies further by saying:  "What you are thinking at the time of your death shapes your next janma because you would have meditated or continuously thought about that for a long time in your life and because of that vaasana you would be able to think only of that."   In Bhagavatham Jadabharatha's story illustrates this point. Bharatha, son of Rishabha Deva  was a great devotee of Bhagavan. But he was deeply attached to a deer and ended up thinking of it at the time of death. He was born as a deer and later got a human janma and got salvation.   It is interesting to note that Bhaktha Prahlada was born as an Asura, as the son of the greatest enemy of Vishnu Bhaga...
